What is prophylactic blood purification therapy?

LDL apheresis is a treatment developed for the treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder. By returning blood to a special filter to remove LDL, VLDL cholesterol and other substances, it was indicated for hypercholesterolemia refractory to drug therapy. Recently, its usefulness has been recognized in severe arteriosclerosis obliterans and special renal diseases.

At Tokyo D-Tower Hospital, we provide preventive medical treatment that aims to prevent the progression of conditions such as arteriosclerosis by directly removing LDL cholesterol, which is the cause of arteriosclerosis, from the blood.

Currently, this treatment is covered by insurance for “familial hypercholesterolemia,” “arteriosclerosis obliterans,” “focal glomerulosclerosis (FGS),” and “systemic lupus erythematosus.

Treatment Method

1. An intravenous needle is placed in a vein in both elbows. Blood is sent from one side through a circuit to a machine, where it is passed through a primary filter to separate “blood cells” and “plasma.
2. Next, the “plasma,” which contains etiologic agents with large molecular weight such as LDL cholesterol, is sent to the secondary filter, where a special membrane adsorbs and removes the etiologic agents.
3. Finally, the purified plasma and blood cells are returned to the body.
